It Happens When You Lie to Yourself...

The problem is that when we don't realize our goals, we blame something/someone else. That disrupts our equilibrium and causes us to feel off-kilter. Maybe even hopeless. Like if you try to build on a spherical foundation (see above!)

Do you have a design in mind for your personal or professional life? Are you the kind of person who has plenty of good ideas but hesitates to speak up in meetings? Who shrinks in a room full of strangers? Who prays you won't be called upon to say something in front of a group?

Why do smart people struggle? 🤔

Smart, capable people don't struggle because they don't know WHAT to say; they struggle because they're trying to get it exactly right.

So, in meetings, networking conversations, or interviews, they second-guess their wording.

They hesitate.

And by the time they are ready, the moment has passed.

The issue isn't confidence, it's COGNITIVE OVERLOAD!

As an actor first learning to perform improv, I learned that when you shift from trying to be

perfect, to learning how to concentrate on your partner and respond in real time---

Everything changes!

The confidence question

Lately, I've been talking with people about speaking with confidence.

And I keep hearing the same thing:

"I know what I want to say, in general at least, but in the moment, I can't seem to spit it out."

So let me say this about that...

That's NOT a confidence problem.

It's a real-time communication problem.

When the pressure is on, your brain doesn't prioritize perfect wording---it prioritizes speed and safety. 🛟

That is why you hesitate, overthink, or go blank.

The good news?

This is a skill you can learn.  🙌

I'm putting together a LIVE training webinar for next week on

'How to Think on Your Feet and Communicate With Clarity Under Pressure.'

Details coming SOON --- but if that STUCK problem is something you've experienced, you're not alone.
